“I’m going to ask Ash Harjo to prom.”
“Ash?” Cassandra asked. Stevie put the lid back on her highlighter and looked up from her text book.
“Yeah, Ash. Why, are you jealous?”
Even though the question wasn’t directed at her, Stevie’s face began to warm. She worried her face was as red as her hair. That’s one sandwich I’d like to be in the middle of. Oh stop!! She thought. Stevie’s crush on Zachary began the first moment she saw him - when he moved into the house across the street from her and Cassandra’s when they were 8. Both girls were instantly smitten and got in a fight so bad that it had almost ruined their friendship. After several days of avoidance, they finally made peace with each other, and a pact stating that neither of them would date Zachary.
This crush on Ash was new though. It was the first time that Stevie had ever felt this way towards a girl and she wasn’t quite sure how to handle this information. Not that it mattered at all, anyway. Her parents were strict and dating a girl would not go so well for her.
Cassandra rolled her eyes. “I’m not jealous, its just….. I don’t really think you’re Ash’s type.”
Stevie and Cassandra shot each other a knowing look as each stifled a giggle.
“Not her type? How you would even know? I’ve heard she’s never even had a boyfriend before.”
“I’ve heard she doesn’t like boys.”
“I’ve heard that’s just a rumor.”
“Okay man, do what you want.” Cassandra threw up her hands humorously.

Skylar pulled her legs up to sit cross-legged on the couch. When her knee brushed against Summer’s leg, Summer unconsciously scooted away from her.
“Remember senior prom?”
“Mmm.” Summer answered, scooting farther away from Skylar and tilting her phone screen away from her. God, how they’d had so many fights over that damn phone. Sometimes Skylar felt like a third wheel in her own relationship. Summer had shown her all her text messages multiple times to prove she wasn’t cheating, but there was just something about the way she was always sneaking around—what is she even doing when she stays late at the office every other night— that made her constantly suspicious.
She’s bringing up marriage again. Summer hit send on the text.
